     Addictions come in many forms and all cost resources.  Our choices are either positive or negative and results can bless or debilitate our lives.
     As Dumbledore counseled Harry Potter:  “our abilities do not define who we are; it is our choices.”
     Change is dependent on action, not ability.  Change begins to the heart what we truly value.   Resource management is a learned skill.  But, what we learn, memorize, catalog, understand, and even get graded on will never become part of our lives unless it finds value from discernment in our hearts.  Everything with value begins with personal choice.  DO YOU VALUE BEING PREPARED?  DO YOU CHOOSE TO BE SELF-RELIANT?

     The principles of the gospel are found in all of the worlds’ religions:  some have more than others.  The basic difference between Methodists, Mormons, and Muslims is content.  You can’t live a principle you don’t know if you don’t have the full meal deal.  The only question is “do you want the feast (the fullness of the gospel) or just a nibble?”
     If calamitous times came and you had a chance to invite the Lord to dine in your home, would your storage program allow feast or famine?
     Did you know that The Savior has invited you to dine with Him after the calamities of the last days?  Yes, you have an invitation to feast with the Lord at the Feast of Fat Things.  This is no Jenny Craig affair.  Read DC 58:6-12.  Then read the list of invited guests in DC 27:5-15.  Your personal invitation, if you live righteously, is in verse 14.

      “An extroverted actuary is someone who is looking at your shoes.”

     Actuaries are generally quiet, reclusive introverts who immerse themselves in number crunching.  They are the ones who determine for insurance companies mortality expectations and death risks of national, regional and local natures.  Do you know what they say about Utahans?

     Because we are clean livers, we last longer than any other socio-economic group in America.  Men can expect to live to age 74, and women age 89.  Read the obituaries.  You’ll see I’m right – on average.

     Ladies, that means you can expect to outlive your husbands 15 years.  That means the next time he changes furnace filters, replaces a light switch, fixes a faucet or sprinkler head, or fertilizes the lawn, you ought to learn from handy him all you can about maintaining the home while you still have him.

     Now you know why there are so few single older plumbers, electricians, landscapers and HVAC technicians.

     Being a good example has no better theater than in the home.  Raising children requires it.  You owe it to tomorrows’ teachers, leaders, lawmakers and advisors to be good parents to them now, and most of what you provide will come from not what you tell them, but what they learn from your example.

     Gandhi said:  “be the change you wish to see in the world.”  With so much bad out there, the good you provide in your home must cover not only good foods, but also good literature, entertainment, family activities, and good memories.  Storage simply means you have an abundance of these necessaries.

     As Carl Sandberg once said:  “A baby is god’s opinion that the world should go on.”  The older we get, the more we realize the value of getting along – at least as well as our parents did . . . maybe even better.

     The present is shadow of our pre-existence, and type of our post-mortal experience.  That which we are progressing in now had its origins in the pre-existence and continues in the after life.

     Think about this – as sons and daughters of a Heavenly Father we were born to use divinely inherited powers to create.  We did before, can do now and can continue to create, and, if we do it right, what we create will endure in the eternities.  Living within the bounds the Lord has set requires closeness to Him to know the what, who, when, and where things He wants of us.  Why’s are sometimes left to faith until, at some future date, His direction becomes clear and we recognize that His prompting is never second best.

     The powers of self-sufficiency reside in learning, applying, persisting in and maintaining all that is good.  You are a prince or princess, god or goddess in training.  You don’t have to know everything, but you are expected to learn something and be self sufficient as a creator.  The opportunity to organize elements is the process of creation, not mortgaging your future for present gain and living off someone else.  There are no mortgages in heaven, and oh yes, it’s heavenly to live without a mortgage.

     Isn’t that an oxymoron?  Armed service is above all a selfless course of action offered from a position of strength against evil or aggression.   Some things never allow for equivocation, “that others may live.”

     Switzerland has for decades required that every male serve in its’ armed reserves from age 18 through 58.  Each man is not only issued arms and ammunition to maintain at home, but each is required to attend training semi-annually in home defense and target practice.  “Every home a fortress,” my Grandmother taught me, was reason enough that her country had never been attacked through two world wars or by present terrorists.  The only Swiss soldiers ever on duty abroad have guarded Vatican City in Rome.

     Switzerland spends over $400 per person annually on self-sufficiency.  How much do you budget? 

     Diligent, defensive, diverse (the Swiss have four national languages), humbly small, a model of self-sufficiency and quiet service through the International Red Cross, UN and other world policy conventions,  . . . these significant world contributions have all started with strong homes.

     “You Mormons seem more concerned about standing before the Lord than your standing before the Lord,” he said.

     “I don’t understand.  Is that a double ontondre?” I said. 

     “Yes.”  (I felt so much better)  “Mormons are more concerned with the end of things, rather than the journey – the event than your condition – His vengeance than His approbation – death rather than the quality of life.  All of your preparedness talk seems focused on avoiding death than learning how to live.  You are a bunch of optimistic pessimists, waiting for the wicked to get what they deserve.”

     And then I understood Pres. Kimball’s words:  “life is a process, not a profession,”  and I try to understand better each day my standing in His presence.  Preparing is always to be on the Lord’s errand.

     Now, there are some notable aspirations!

·         Wife – without a loving helpmate, there is no eternity.

·         Homemade – everything is always the best when made sweet through thrift, love, and selflessness.

·         Baseball – anyone who can play the game and win when the odds are 9 to 1 against them (opponents cover all the bases, fields, and even play out of bounds) has to be creative and compete to get safely home.

What is it you are living for?  The family is what you make it, and it can last forever.  Much is against you, but you can prepare, do right, and run hard to get home.  Agency is your opportunity to self-sufficiency.  No one else can bat for you.   It is within your individual powers – TO WIN.
